The Fear of the Lord

I have good news. Our God is the source of all wisdom. If you have a desire for wisdom, that pursuit starts with a fear of the Lord. The phrase “the fear of the Lord” is found throughout the book of Proverbs. But fear?? What good comes from fear? It has been said that the fear of the Lord causes us to run toward God instead of running from God. Now that’s a different idea. Typically fear causes us to run and hide, but to fear the Lord makes us want to draw close to him. The fear of the Lord causes our eyes to stay focused on Him and his greatness while other earthly fears will grow dim. It’s the fear of the Lord that causes us to cry out to him for forgiveness. This kind of fear is life-giving. Jesus was faced with the terrifying reality of the cross. Anyone would be afraid! Praise God that Jesus’s fear of the Lord God was greater than his fear of the cross. He was the perfect sacrifice for us to be made right with God.
