What is the Gospel?

At its core, the word Gospel means "Good News." It is the announcement of what God has sovereignly accomplished through His Son, Jesus Christ, to save sinners and reconcile them to Himself for His ultimate glory.

Here is that message explained in three parts:

God is the holy, sovereign Creator of all things, ruling over the universe with perfect justice, wisdom, and goodness. He created humanity in His image to know Him, enjoy Him, and live under His righteous rule in holiness and joy.

Because God created us, we belong to Him, and our purpose is to glorify Him in everything we do.

"The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."
— Psalm 24:1

Instead of honoring God, our first parents rebelled against Him, and every one of us has inherited and chosen that same pathway of sin. Sin is any failure to conform to God’s holy law in thought, word, or deed.

Because of sin, human nature is thoroughly corrupted—a condition Scripture reveals as total depravity. We are not merely sick or off-track; we are spiritually dead in our transgressions and completely unable to save or reform ourselves by our own willpower, good works, or religious effort.

This rebellion separates us from a holy God and leaves us under His righteous judgment, bringing brokenness, spiritual death, and condemnation into our lives and world.

"As it is written: 'There is no one righteous, not even one... For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.'"
— Romans 3:10, 23

Though we deserved judgment, God, being rich in mercy, chose to display the riches of His grace by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world.

Jesus—fully God and fully man—lived a life of perfect, sinless obedience to God’s law. On the cross, He served as a substitute for sinners. He bore the full wrath of God against sin, paying the penalty we owed (substitutionary atonement). Three days later, He physically rose from the dead, demonstrating His victory over sin and death, and sat down at the right hand of God as King.

Salvation is accomplished entirely by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
— John 3:16

The Gospel calls every person to respond not through human merit or self-reliance, but through a heart transformed by God's Spirit:

1. Repentance: A God-given turning away from your sin, self-righteousness, and self-rule, hating the sin you once loved.
2. Faith: Resting entirely upon Jesus Christ alone—His life, death, and resurrection—for your righteousness and standing before God.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
— Ephesians 2:8–9

If God is convicting your heart and awakening you to your need for Christ, you do not need to clean yourself up first. Turn to Him in prayer:

• "Lord God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner separated from Your holiness, and I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for sinners like me and rose again. Grant me the grace to repent of my sin and trust fully in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen."
