Trust His Plan

I have good news. Even in the midst of hardship and suffering, God is always at work. As we read through the story of God‘s chosen people, we have witnessed God continually working out his great plan of redemption. Though life is hard and struggles surround, he is not far removed from his people. In the days of the judges, Naomi and Ruth had both suffered much loss. Without a husband to provide and with a famine in the land, they were faced with an uncertain future. In his providence, God had planned for this. He was still working. What Naomi and Ruth needed was a redeemer. Their hope was in a kinsman redeemer to take Ruth as his bride. Boaz was a protector and provider. He was generous and kind. And although Ruth was a foreigner, a Moabite, Boaz welcomed and accepted her. He redeemed her. Just like Ruth, we need a redeemer to welcome us in, to care for and provide for us. Our redeemer would come to us through the line of Boaz. “Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.” (Ruth 4:21,22) Jesus was of the line of David, Jesse, Obed & Boaz. In spite of loss, struggle, and famine, God made a way for our redeemer!

Our world is full of trials and heartache that doesn’t simply evaporate if you follow Jesus. Jesus told us this world would be hard, but he also told us to take heart. He is our peace because he has overcome the world. That is good news!

He Is Risen

I have good news. We serve a risen Savior. Not only is He risen, but He is reigning as well, seated at the right hand of the Father. What a wonder it would be to walk the road to Emmaus with Jesus after his resurrection when “beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." (Luke 24:37). Would that awareness - realizing God’s plan to send his Son to redeem His people - have helped his people during the time of the judges? Would they have stayed close to God instead of choosing sin, wickedness, and turning to other gods? The people needed someone to turn their hearts back to God, to lead them in wisdom. Even more than that, the people needed someone to make them right with God. Only Jesus could do that. Only the perfect life of Jesus, his obedience to the point of death on a cross, and his resurrection from the dead could do that for us. Praise God!! Jesus is alive!!

Promise Keeper

I have good news. We serve a God who always keeps his promises. Look back at Joshua 21:45 one more time. “Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.” That is truly amazing! Can you even imagine? No one has ever perfectly kept their promises. No one except God! He alone is worthy of our praise and worship. That is what makes the beginning of the book of Judges so painful and heartbreaking to read. Although God kept his promises, Israel did not complete the work God had for them. They did not drive out all the nations, and it cost them dearly. One generation later, God’s chosen, delivered people are turning away from God and walking in the way of the nations around them: marrying their daughters and sons, worshiping other gods. It’s devastating. Most of the turmoil through the rest of the Old Testament can be traced back to Israel’s partial obedience. Our need for a savior is magnified as we see who God is and who we are. We need a rescuer, and yet again God will keep His promise!

Take Courage

I have good news. You can walk through life with courage because when you walk with God, you are never alone. God spoke to both Moses and Joshua and told them to be strong and courageous and to not fear. How was that even possible? They had wandered through the wilderness for 40 years, Moses was dead and now they face battles on every side. Yet through it all God was with them. Whether in a pillar of cloud or a pillar of fire, He was there. By God’s provision alone, and in accordance with their obedience, Israel would take possession of and dwell in the land that God had promised them. The courage required for this would only be found in carefully obeying God. (See Joshua 1:7). We are to know his word and allow it to control us COMPLETELY. Yes, we fall short on a daily basis, but God has a plan and it will not fail. Take courage!

Forget Me Not

I have good news. The word of God is powerful. It is his word that created all things. It is his word that calms the raging sea. It is his word that brings the dead to life. God reminded his people repeatedly to fear him, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve him wholeheartedly, and to keep his commandments. He knew his people would need help, and he spoke to them his life-giving word. He told them time and time again to be careful to obey all the words He gave them - to not add anything and to not take anything away. He promised a blessing if his children would obey his word. And he warned of a curse if they forgot him and his instructions. When we know God‘s word and keep God‘s word it is for our good and His glory.

Nothing Is Hidden

I have good news. Our God sees us. We never have to fear being alone or abandoned. This ought to encourage our hearts, but does this cause discomfort instead? God warned Israel that they could not hide their sin from him. He told them that their sin would find them out, yet they struggled in sin. They were easily swayed by the pagan cultures around them and sinned against God. They didn’t take seriously the effects of sin and God's warning of judgment. Like Israel, we are tempted to believe that no one will know about our sin. We are tempted to believe that there will be no consequences for our sin. That simply isn’t true. Instead of trying to hide your sin, find hope in knowing you can run to God! Confess and you are forgiven!!

God sees us. He knows our sin and loves us still. But he loves us too much to leave us there, so he sent Jesus. In Romans 5:8 we learn "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." That is good news!

Don't Follow Your Heart

I have good news. In a world full of competing voices telling us how to live, we can trust the heart of God. How many times have you watched a show and heard the advice “just follow your heart”? That is the worst advice ever!! The book of Numbers shows us just how destructive (and even deadly) that advice can be. There is opposition to God’s plan, rebellion, complaint, fear, loss, defeat, a plague, and death. Why? Because the people followed their wicked, selfish hearts. And all along, a faithful, steadfast, holy, all-powerful, merciful, loving God was present with them. He was guiding them every step of their journey. Even though his chosen people struggled in sin, God graciously and continuously provided a way for his people to find life.

Only A Spotless Lamb

I have good news. Our God is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. He forgives our sins. This truth ought to stir our hearts and make us willing and eager to know his commands and obey his commands. God's standard is righteousness, but we fall short. He is a holy God and cannot dwell in darkness. Like the children of Israel, we struggle with sin and drift towards darkness. But with the shed blood of a spotless lamb atonement can be made, and sins are forgiven. We are made right with God. What an indescribable gift!

Praise God for His complete provision! We have been brought near to God by the blood of Jesus Christ! This is good news!!

God Our Provider

I have good news. Our God delights in caring for and providing for us. He knows the physical and spiritual needs of His children. He provided manna and water as the people of Israel journeyed through the wilderness. He gave them the law to teach them of their lostness and guide them in their walk. He ordained the building of a tabernacle so He could dwell among them. He sent his son Jesus: the bread sent from heaven, the fulfillment of the law, God with us. In Jesus, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 1:7). Praise God for His perfect provision!

He Is Able

I have good news. Our God sees us. He knows us. And he loves us still. Our God uses unlikely, unlovely people to do the unexpected-not because of who we are, but because of who He is. He is working out his perfect plan of redemption: not only to free Israel from bondage in Egypt, but to free us from our bondage of sin. The story of Exodus is our story. God heard his people’s cry, he saw their need for deliverance and He kept his promise to set us free.

Our God Reigns

I have good news for you – right now, even at this very moment, God is seated on his throne. Our God reigns. For those who walk by faith, through the ups and downs, we can trust that God is working all things for His glory and our good. Joseph‘s life is evidence of God reigning over all things. From the outside, Joseph’s life seemed desperate and chaotic, but God was near and, in His wisdom and foreknowledge, worked all these things for a greater purpose. Trials and struggles were used to preserve the family line that would provide our promised Messiah. Take heart and trust that God is in control!

Were It Not For Grace

I have good news for you: our God is a God of grace. I’ve heard grace explained as God’s unmerited favor, or simply getting what you don’t deserve.

In the story of Genesis, there is deceit, disputes and disobedience among God’s chosen people. Why would God choose to bless them? How could a redeemer come from a people steeped in sin? Only by His grace. Praise God! God’s grace was evident in the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and most clearly seen in sending His one and only Son, Jesus, to save us from our sin. Rejoice in the grace of our faithful God!

In Mark 13, Jesus warns us multiple times to stay awake. What can you do to stay spiritually awake?
As in Psalm 145, THIS WEEK, how will you declare, praise, speak of, and make known God? Why is He worth it?
When life is hard and God seems distant, what will you do to hold fast to God and persevere? Do you have people who will help you?
Think of a time when God’s will wasn't what you expected. How did you respond? Looking back, would you do anything differently?
What connection do you see between a fear of God and the strength to resist temptation? Who do you fear more: man or God?

Final Thoughts

God never said the life of his followers would be one of ease or comfort. He did promise that he would be with us and that His grace is sufficient. You can rest in that, my friends. That is good news!

Faith Over Fear

I have some good news for you. The good news is that there is nothing that our God can’t do. Like Abram and Sarai, when things don’t go as we would like, our temptation is to charge ahead - because of fear and the “what ifs”. If God has promised it, He will keep His promise, and He is able to do it because of who He is. Thank him for being a God of righteousness, faithfulness, and grace. Have the courage, faith, and discipline to trust Him and wait for His timing.

Final Thoughts

Pray expectantly for what God is going to teach you through His Word is 2026. If you miss a week, try to catch up or just pick up where you can. He will honor your efforts and help you through this. Just put one foot in front of the other. He promises that He will never leave you, that His Word will never return empty, and that He is faithful even when we're not. And THAT is good news.

God Is For Us

I have good news. Our God is for us. We are his chosen people, he is the giver of all good things, and he has set us free. God is in control and he ALONE calls the shots. His way will always prevail. He expects and deserves our reverence, worship, and awe. We get to choose: obedience and security with God or disobedience and separation from God. Israel struggled with that. We struggle with that. Sin is an ongoing battle in our lives, but praise God that the war has already been won. When you are in Christ, you are credited with Jesus’ righteousness. By grace through faith we can have confidence before God. Praise Him for his provision!

What is the last thing you have done that required faith? How are you walking “by faith?” What evidence is there?
How often do you show mercy? How does God’s mercy affect your relationship with others? Would people identify you as merciful?
When has it been hard for you to forgive? How did you work through this? Did God’s promise of forgiveness have any effect on you?
Have you ever felt forgotten by God? How does his accounting for his people (Numbers 2) remind you of his attention on us?
Have you ever forgotten God’s standard of holiness? When? When you fall short, where do you put your hope?

Final Thought

We all fall short of the glory of God. We cannot reach his holy standard. This is why TODAY you should rejoice in the finished work of Jesus. Because of him, we can come before God without fear. That is good news!

Be Holy As I Am Holy

I have good news. We serve a holy God who cares for us deeply. But we all have a serious problem. Sin. Our sin separates us from God, but he loves us too much to leave us there. God gave the law to Israel to show them their great need for a savior. He desires for his people to be set apart to Him. We can see how God cares about every aspect of our lives in the detailed requirements of the law. He knows the depths of our wickedness and that our greatest need is Him. So we need a rescuer. He made a way for us to dwell with Him, to be holy as He is holy, and to belong to Him. Ultimately, we find that in Jesus.

Final Thoughts

God showed Israel the way, He gave them the law and made a lasting covenant with them. The fulfillment of it all came in Jesus: He is the way, the truth and the life. That is good news!
